Thank You, Supporters for Changing Lives in 2024
December 18, 2024
Women’s Campus resident Stephanie is hoping to break the toxic cycle she came from. After being neglected by her parents because they were unfit to care for her, she lashed out as a teenager and began to follow in their footsteps. Stephanie developed a serious substance use problem on and off for 17 years, which also led to years of chronic homelessness. That is, until the day she simply broke down and had “enough.” Stephanie was tired of feeling like she was doing nothing with her life (even though 90% of the time she was homeless she did have a job) and was overwhelmed with her situation. This overwhelming tiredness sparked motivation in her to finally want to fight for her life and ask for help.
Now sober, Stephanie was accepted as a resident of the Women’s Campus six months ago and says being there has dramatically changed her. Stephanie has found that the communal living environment has cultivated a mutual support between the residents to help one another – both mentally and emotionally – even if they don’t always get along. The case management staff has been a valuable support system and helps her make decisions. She’s learning structure, how to be “an adult” and how to save money. She’s discovered how to stay positive even on the hard days. Stephanie also has a job, which she says helps keep her mentally fit and is helping her save money for a car.
Before living at the Women’s Campus, Stephanie was also a guest in our main shelter. Both experiences with our staff have helped her build trust with others. “The staff is so caring. I especially wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for Elizabeth (Rogers, Associate Director of Programs & Services). She was one of the only people who didn’t lose hope in me – when I was both in and out of my addiction. She didn’t give up on me and it has made a big difference in my life.”
We shared some of Stephanie’s story during this year’s A Night in the Cold (ANITC) on December 6th. We’re so inspired that she’s had the courage to keep fighting for herself even after the adversity she’s been through, including spending cold nights on the street. We’re proud to say because of stories like Stephanie’s, 280 people – including many of you – were inspired to register and participate to sleep outside on what was surely the coldest ANITC yet. Over $213,000 was raised for this year’s campaign, and we’re so grateful for supporters like you who either participated and fundraised or contributed with donations to help our neighbors in need like Stephanie. She dug deep, accepted a Hand UP and is thriving on her journey to independence.
Your support of our programs makes a difference, just like Stephanie mentioned above. If you weren’t able to make a contribution to A Night in the Cold, consider making a year end gift if you haven’t already done so.
Happy Holidays from everyone at HSI!
