Showing Empathy and Solidarity at ‘A Night in the Cold’
December 19, 2025
“I didn’t have to figure out where I’d sleep the next night.”
This sentiment, reflected by HSI CEO Jaclyn Stoll, rang true for so many who participated in our 6th Annual A Night in the Cold on Friday, December 5th. While participants knew they’d return to warmth the next day, the experience reminded us that many of our neighbors endure this reality night after night—while trying to hold jobs, find stable housing, and balance trauma and daily responsibilities.
One of our current shelter guests, Michael, lived this reality. When he and his wife were evicted due to black mold in their home, his wife became gravely ill and was hospitalized. For nearly three months, Michael slept on a bench outside the hospital to stay close to her, with nowhere else to go. During that time, he called Homeless Solutions daily and even visited the shelter hoping there would be a spot for him. He sometimes slept on the bench at the bus stop outside our facility, determined to enter our program and restart his life.
When a spot finally opened, Michael moved in and immediately began working with our case managers. He continues submitting housing applications throughout New Jersey while visiting and supporting his wife at the hospital. His determination to achieve his goals inspires us every day.
There was no lack of empathy or learning on Friday evening, especially at our ANITC HQ where the crowd stood silently and respectfully to listen to speakers like Michael before taking part in a learning experience – our “Hand Up Journey” to become more educated about the realities, truths – and myths – of people experiencing homelessness.
