Celebrating Our CEO

We’re excited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our fearless leader, Dan McGuire’s tenure here at Homeless Solutions! On May 17, 2004, Dan joined HSI as Project Developer in the Housing Development division, quickly becoming the Director of the department the following year as part of a succession plan. Under Dan’s guidance, HSI was able to grow the Housing Development division, transforming derelict buildings and underutilized lots into safe, affordable homes throughout Morris County. These include several projects that were built environmentally friendly and have received recognition at the state and national levels. One such property, our Drakestown Road Apartments in Washington Township, was the first multi-family project in Morris County to be LEED Platinum certified, a project recognized by the US Green Building Council of NJ with a 2011 Building a Greener NJ Award.

When Dan became CEO in 2016, he continued to push our affordable housing footprint ahead with the construction of 3 beautiful new properties in Morristown and Morris Township, and the effort to launch the unique shared housing model that is now our Women’s Campus (permanent housing for single women who are homeless or at risk).

Thanks to Dan’s vision and efforts, in 2019 the County agreed to add the ground floor of the shelter building to our lease. This ultimately resulted in our Next Level Shelter Renovation project, which includes our Winter Warming Center, a wonderful new kitchen and dining area, and our Wellness Wing—all of which have enhanced the quality of life and outcomes for our guests.

Dan’s focus had to pivot from housing to leading through challenges like we’d never seen before when the pandemic hit in 2020. Through his tireless leadership, our staff worked diligently to ensure we adapted efficiently, created new policies and procedures and most importantly kept everyone safe. One silver lining of COVID was the opportunity to create our A Night in the Cold event that Dan had been advocating to do for years.  This has become Dan’s favorite HSI event, where he loves to sleep in a makeshift tent under “his” tree at our Wing Drive office.

Not only is Dan an impactful non-profit leader, he’s also one of the most compassionate people you’ll ever meet. Whether he’s showing the children in our programs how to play disc golf or organizing game nights or “Donuts/Dessert with Dan” for adults at our shelter; or on the phone tirelessly advocating for more funding for affordable housing and shelter programs or stopping to chat with our guests as he walks through the shelter – his number one priority is the people we serve.   And when he needs some downtime, you can find him doing what he loves – participating in a game of disc golf!

Click here to join us in celebrating Dan and you’ll be helping the people he dedicates himself to every day.  Cheers to Dan and his 20 years of selfless service to HSI!
